EXCITING NEW BERLIN ARRIVALS: ACE & TATE AND LE PETIT ROYAL

Time for a break: from eyewear experts to a culinary stalwart’s sibling, we welcome two quite new and extremely hip openings to the capital.

EXCITING NEW BERLIN ARRIVALS: ACE & TATE AND LE PETIT ROYAL

The celebrated Dutch eyewear brand has set up shop in the Haupstadt with a brand new flagship, and Berlin’s renowned Grill Royal has a sophisticated little sibling in hip Charlottenburg. Both demonstrate a flair for style and an understanding of the city’s evolving aesthetic and developing demands.

ACE & TATE

With a talent for trendspotting and skill for creating classics, Ace & Tate has finally opened a permanent outlet in Berlin, following a string of successful pop-up stores across the capital. The underlying concept is affordable style. High quality, well-designed eyewear needn’t cost the earth and the new store reflects this with a pared down aesthetic. The brand partnered with Berlin design agency New Tendency to create a post-industrial interior of wood, metal and concrete.

This cutting-edge collaboration also extends to select pieces for Ace & Tate’s SS16 collection. This season’s main collection, entitled Oasis, takes inspiration from natural bodies of water and botanicals to create lush, indulgent frames that appear to be constantly caught in the reflective dazzle of a sunlit pool. Likewise, in the new Prenzlauer Berg store, mirrored floors and ceilings bounce the light around in a way that both compliments the unique design of the Oasis collection, whilst remaining open to endless interpretation as the seasons unfold.

LE PETIT ROYAL

Grill Royal has been a Berlin institution for some years now, so the opening of a branch in newly fashionable City West is surely a recipe for success. Founders Stephan Landwehr, Boris Radczun and Moritz Estermann also opened the famed Pauly Saal in Mitte’s renovated Jewish Girls School in 2012, followed by the much-hyped Icelandic restaurant Dottir in 2015. With a heritage like that, Le Petit Royal needs no further introduction. Fine French cuisine is the order of the day, with Baltic-fresh fish and oysters, and modern interpretations of classic dishes such as coq au vin. With exacting quality standards that extend from the food to the exceptional service, Le Petit Royal also boasts an impressive walk-in wine cabinet full of over 500 international wines, with a focus on those from across France.

Being slightly smaller than its older sibling, Petit Royal enjoys an elegant intimacy that’s rare here in the Hauptstadt. Discrete celebrities, celebrating couples, industry folk entertaining clients, groups of friends on an indulgent night out... the restaurant's clientele runs the gamut of Berlin society, an aspect that adds to its exclusive yet authentic vibe. The space alone offers an excuse for a visit. Sitting near storied Savignyplatz, Le Petit Royal occupies the ground floor of a period corner building, with vertiginous windows, wooden floors and lots of hidden nooks, with custom-made tables, for added privacy. Decor-wise, the style is unmistakably inspired by Italian mid-century modern, with dark greens offset by solid oak. The wood-paneled bar, replete with iridescent peacock wallpaper, is reminiscent of a time and place far from 21st century Berlin: a boozy nightcap helps indulge the fantasy further.
