Analog Mensch Digital

Design an der Schnittstelle

Analog Mensch Digital

Philippe, you’re born and raised in Germany, travelled to a lot of different countries and now live and work at Shutterstock in New York. What are your tasks and responsibilities at the stock photography agency?
My role at Shutterstock is Design Director. I oversee all Marketing Efforts for Shutterstock for the different global regions. We have an amazing team of Designer which are all curious, hard working and much smarter then myself and I’m learning constantly from them. The team and I work on the design of our on and offline brand campaigns, on event & partnership programs, we support our international blogs and rethink the brand from the inside out.

Please tell us more about the concept, the idea behind the upcoming exhibition „Analog Mensch Digital“ in the Direktorenhaus in Berlin!
The idea for “Analog Mensch Digital – Design an der Schnittstelle” reflects our new brand positioning which we call Art + Tech. At its heart, Shutterstock is a technology company, which works at the intersection of both disciplines and always researches and improves it services for the creative community. With the exhibition we wanted to give a look into contemporary, visionary German Design. We invited 10 amazing design studios from all over Germany.

What was the intention  - is there a message you want to communicate by arranging this exhibition?
We want to give the studios and German design a platform to express themselves. It’s always good to bring visionary people and studios together and let them work freely on ideas and concepts to start a conversation. We felt that there is so much entrepreneurship in the design scene which connects really well to our DNA.

Can you explain the reason why you picked exactly these designers you’re now working with? Which eligibility criterions were decisive?
The first criterion was that the studio creates outstanding work, and all of them do – some now for 20 years. We also sought opportunities to work with studios from all over Germany and we picked them by respective discipline. The studios range from analogue working to data driven design studios. They give a great overview of design today. The second criterion was if the studio was willing to work with us on the exhibition and had time to commit. There is no detailed briefing on the deliverables so the studios represent themselves in the exhibition on the bigger exhibition theme.

Why are just German design studios involved? Are you going to do another one with international designers?
We certainly hope so. Shutterstock does business in over 150 countries, so the possibilities for collaboration around the world are limitless. Germany is an important market for Shutterstock, which is why we opened our first international office there in October 2013. Germany and the German Design scene are predestined for a show like this. German Design is amazing, the excellence and creativity is hard to match.

What’s next? Is Shutterstock planning a new project we will be able to look forward to?
Shutterstock continues to expand with new and exciting content types. We recently launched a Music offering. We also continue to innovate with our search functionalities through innovative tools on our site. Our most recent is a tool is called Palette, which allows users to search for images by customizing color schemes. In Germany, we just finished our first of at least three years as sponsor for the Shutterstock Agency Cup. Looking ahead, we look forward to engaging with customers and creatives across Germany and the world.
