ARCHITECTURE IN LIGHTS AND COLOURS

Dystown - Martin Kobe personal exhibition in Milan

ARCHITECTURE IN LIGHTS AND COLOURS

For the first time in Italy, Martin Kobe is holding is personal art exhibition at the Brand New Gallery in Milan. His production is characterised by srupulousness, and gives the impressions of a man born under the German Democratic Republic, grown up during the socialist urban pianification, and therefore obsessed with architecture. His work is influenced by the images of his own collection or architectural draws, by his travels’ pictures and by plenty of historical-artistic references, from Piranesi to the Bauhaus. As a result, his images are visionary and seem to stand out of time, hung in the balance between fiction and reality, where the architectural structures simply suggest their sources, without making them completely clear. They open kind of labyrinths of fronts and beams that, crossing to eachother, capture the audience inside the painting. Also due to the absence of any real blank space.

Kobe’s work is a sort of idealization of architecture through colours, smooth planes, drawn marks and areas where the paint is scraped off to the canvas. Lights and colours in his paintings are warm and clashing, so that they emanate in the show floor a surreal atmosphere. The final results seem more like methaphysical and abstract paintings, than rational architectural ones. Martin Kobe was born in Dresden in 1973 and studied art in Lipsia, where he is living and working right now. In 2000 he graduated at the Academy of Visual Arts of Lipsia, where he was a student of Arno Rink, with whom he obtained his master in painting three years later. He also obtained the Special Award during the sixth edition of the Kunstpreis der Leipziger and a scholarship at the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff.

Nowadays his paintings are exhibited in international galleries, such as the White Cube in London, and included in important collections and exhibitons, in Europe and in the USA; among these it’s worth remembering the Touring exhibition Life After Death: New Leipzig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection. In 2005 he has been invited at the second Prague Biennial exhibition, and in 2011 his work has been selected by Barry Schwabsky to be included in his volume Vitamin P2: New Perspectives in Paintings.
