AUTOMOTIVE & FASHION TAKE ON MILAN

At this year’s Milan Design Week, aside from the inspiring interior and furniture, the automotive and fashion industries were out in force.

AUTOMOTIVE & FASHION TAKE ON MILAN

With macro trends moving towards experiences over pure products, Milan is not just focused on objects and interiors these days. Increasingly, savvy brands are using the event as a platform for innovative experiential encounters, with the fashion and automotive industries leading the way. Scroll down, be surprised and get inspired by the latest trends at this year’s Design Week.

Driving Creativity

A wide range of car manufacturers showed off their creativity with some show-stopping products and experiences. Toyota’s made a big impression with their concept car made almost entirely of cedar and birch, using Japanese joinery techniques. Though it can reach nearly 30 mph, the Setsuna is envisioned as a family heirloom rather than practical road vehicle. Elsewhere, MINI’s Living installation presented a solution to the housing shortage in cramped urban cores with a shared residence concept of small sleeping areas attached to communal living space. Both Lexus and Mercedes-Benz went down the digital route, the former with a multisensory collaboration between Studio Formafantasma and Michelin-Starred chef Yoji Tokuyoshi; the latter with an ocean-inspired lamp made up of 288 dimmable LEDs and designed by lighting legends Artemide. Working with German designer Ingo Maurer,  Audi painted a Milan skyscraper red with the help of clever lighting techniques.

Fashion at the Forefront

From Dolce and Gabbana to Issey Miyake, fashion was at front and centre in Milan, with myriad brands in attendance, many featuring interesting alliances across other areas of design. Some of our favourites include Bulgari’s collaboration with the late Zaha Hadid, which took the form of a geometric structure erected in the gardens of the Bulgari Hotel to showcase the fashion house’s Heritage collection. Another fashion paragon, Christian Lacroix teamed up with interiorsicon Moooi to create digitally designed and produced carpets featuring colourful, textural jewels and garden imagery.

Much loved at Milan was an installation by Marni, who transformed their Milan space into a ballroom, using dance to express the connection between their designs and their geographic muse, Colombia. Hermès’ Home Collection, featuring furniture, textiles and accessories, was ambitiously and dramatically presented with influence from the brand’s equine heritage, as well as from Japanese design. Duvetica showcased Moretti’s iconic Bora Crystal drinking glass in its various iterations since 2001. Finally, Walter Terruso and La Perla joined forces to celebrate femininity with a beautiful custom created vanity table named Mia. For the second time, Tory Burch came to Milan in collaboration with Wallpaper Magazine and presented "The Kiss" - an installation by Studio Glithero London which got its inspiration from the Tory Burch Home Spongeware table design collection.
