Weekender: Die dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel
Alle fünf Jahre ist es wieder soweit: Das kunstinteressierte Publikum pilgert nach Kassel, um sich die weltweit größte Kunstausstellung anzusehen. Wir waren auch dort und verraten euch hier die wichtigsten Hintergründe, die besten Locations und absoluten Must-sees!
Insgesamt sollte man mindestens drei bis vier Tage einplanen, um vor allem auch Zeit für die vielen eindrucksvollen Filmarbeiten zu haben. Und damit ihr diese Zeit in Kassel auch effektiv nutzen könnt, stellen wir euch in den nächsten beiden Tagen einige unserer persönlichen Must-sees etwas genauer vor!
Es wurde viel diskutiert über die neue Documenta-Kuratorin Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev – liebevoll „C.C.B“ genannt. Künstler und Kritiker waren besorgt, sie würde die etablierte Kunst mit ihrem Ruf nach Gleichberechtigung von Pflanzen, Tieren und Menschen in die Esoterik-Ecke drängen. Über die Aussage, Hunde seien ein ebenso erwünschtes Publikum wie Menschen, verbreitete sich einiges Stirnrunzeln. Nach einem Besuch der dreizehnten Documenta, lösen sich diese Befürchtungen allerdings auf. C.C.B. reiht sich in die Tradition ihrer vorherigen Kollegen ein, und setzt auch bei dieser Documenta den Schwerpunkt auf politische und gesellschaftliche Themen, die anhand von Kunst transparent gemacht werden sollen. Damit ist eine große und vielfältige Schau entstanden, die einige spannende Arbeiten zeigt und unbedingt ein Besuch wert ist!

Die Standorte sind wie jedes Mal über ganz Kassel verteilt und die Arbeiten deshalb oft sehr ortsspezifisch angelegt. Besonders intensiv wurde diesmal die große Parkanlage Karlsaue benutzt, in der über die ganze Fläche verteilt in kleineren Arealen, Gewächshäusern oder Holzhütten Werke zu sehen sind. Ein bewährter Tipp ist es, sich hierfür Fahrräder auszuleihen und dann einen gemütlichen Nachmittag damit zu verbringen, ein Kunstwerk nach dem anderen abzufahren. Ein absolutes Highlight ist hier die „Wald“-Arbeit von Janet Cardiff und George Bures Miller, die inmitten von Bäumen eine überwältigende Soundinstalltion kreiert haben.

Der Hauptstandort jedes Mal ist das Fridericianum, vor dem schon einst Joseph Beuys damit begann, seine 7000 Eichen zu pflanzen. Die meisten Besucher beginnen deshalb auch am Fridericianum, obwohl es sich bei der aktuellen Documenta empfiehlt, es an den Schluss zu setzen – sollte man noch Zeit haben. Das Museum beherbergt eine schiere Masse an Arbeiten, die – gerade wenn man in einem Pulk von Menschen nur so durch die Räume geschwemmt wird – nicht so sehr zur Geltung kommen. Eine Ausnahme ist hier das Werk des Mexikaners Mario Garcia Torres, der sich auf die Spuren des 1994 verstorbenen Künstlers Alghiero Boetti begibt (auch einer der berühmten Boetti-Wandteppichen ist zu sehen!).

Direkt neben dem Fridericianum ist die Documenta-Halle, die vor allem viele Gustav-Metzger-Arbeiten zeigt. Übersehen sollte man dort auf keinen Fall den allerletzten Raum mit einer Arbeit der in Bombay lebenden Künstlerin Nalini Malani! Ihre Rauminstallation zeigt betörende Licht- und Schattenspiele, die auf die Rolle der Frau im indischen Kulturkreis aufmerksam machen.

Ein Stückchen weiter befindet sich dann das Ottoneum, das sich besonders mit dem Dialog zwischen Kunst und Wissenschaft beschäftigt – ein prägendes Themenfeld der Documenta 13. Weiter geht’s dann in die Neue Galerie, die einer der Ausstellungsorte mit den spannendsten Arbeiten ist und auf jeden Fall Zeit benötigt. Publikumsliebling Geoffrey Farmer zeigt in seiner XXL-Collage einen Überblick über die Masse an Bildmaterial, die die Menschheit seit Erfindung der Fotografie immer mehr überflutet und macht damit auf die Banalisierung durch Massenmedien aufmerksam. Die Portraits der Südafrikanerin Zanele Muholi von queeren und homosexuellen Menschen thematisieren einen menschenrechtlichen Missstand auf dem Afrikanischen Kontinent: In einer Filmdokumentation erzählen lesbische Frauen davon, dass sie von Männern vergewaltigt wurden, die glaubten, dass sie die Frauen so von ihrer „Krankheit“ – der Homosexualtität – heilen könnten. Die Portraitierten stellen in den Fotografien aber nicht ihr Leid dar, sondern ganz im Gegenteil den Stolz und den Mut, den sie brauchen, um für ihre Lebensweise einzustehen. Roman Ondák, der definitiv zu den Stars unter den Documenta-Künstlern zählt, überzeugt im unteren Stock der Neuen Galerie mit einer Ansammlung von Bildausschnitten, die er mit eigenen – oft amüsierenden –Bildunterschriften kürte.

Auch der Kasseler Hauptbahnhof benötigt mindestens einen ganzen Nachmittag, wenn nicht sogar einen ganzen Tag. Die beiden Kulturflügel beherbergen viele Filmarbeiten und Installationen, die im Charme von alten Lagerhäusern präsentiert werden. Highlight der meisten Documenta-Besucher ist allerdings die Film- und Soundinstallation von Janet Cardiff und George Bures Miller im Hauptteil des Bahnhofs. Mit einem Ipod und Kopfhörern ausgestattet macht man sich auf eine Tour durch das Gebäude, in der sich Film und Sound der Künstler mit der eigenen Realität überschneiden. Zwar muss man dafür teilweise leider sehr lange anstehen – es lohnt sich aber definitiv! An den anderen, meist kleineren Ausstellungsorten, beispielsweise die Orangerie, das Hugenottenhaus oder das Gebrüder-Grimm-Museum gibt es auch noch ein paar Glanzstücke, die durch die kurzen Wege innerhalb Kassels auch alle gut zu erreichen sind.
