Contemporary cult and classics

The latest Art Basel edition in Hong Kong is already in the starting blocks: Only a few more days to go until one of the greatest Asian art shows will attract thousands of artists, fans and experts from all over the world. But not just China is gripped by an arty art fever – there are several must-see exhibitions over here in Europe as well. We’ve picked some of the current cultural highlights for an inspirational roundup.

Mario Testino: In Your Face

After it’s premiere in 2012 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, it is the first time that 'In Your Face' by Mario Testino is exhibited in Europe. The Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin presents the work of the influential photographer at the Kulturforum. Testions photographs – formal portraits with private snapshots, nudes with fashion, and black and white with colour – are known for evoking elegance, irreverence and contradiction. The exhibition, which was realised in partnership with Swarovski, shows the full range of his photographic work, in 125 images, including his most famous shots of Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Josh Hartnett and Mick Jagger with Keith Richards.

Jeff Koons – Retrospective

The retrospective of the well-known contemporary artist has arrived in the galleries of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Till end of April 2015 Popeye, Michael Jackson and Bubbles, the Incredible Hulk and a giant inflatable dog have taken up residency in the complex building in the Beaubourg area of the 4th arrondissement. With the current exhibition, the Centre Pompidou looks back on the 35-year career of one of the most controversial American artists living and working today. As Koons is known for his reproductions of banal objects – such as balloon animals produced in stainless steel with mirror-finish surfaces – be excited and expect some overwhelming kitsch, fluorescent rabbits and lots of shiny things.

Konstantin Grcic – Panorama

The German industrial designer Konstantin Grcic is probably one of the most influential designers of our time! Combining an industrial aesthetic with experimental, artistic elements, Grcic’s works are serious and functional and many of his creations, like the Chair_one or the Mayday lamp, are widely acclaimed as design classics. In collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum, the experimental contemporary art and architecture museum Z33 in Hasselt, Belgium, is currently presenting “Konstantin Grcic – Panorama”, the largest solo exhibition on the artist and his work to date. The exhibition shows several largescale installations rendering Grcic’s personal visions for life in the future: a home interior, a design studio and an urban environment with an additional fourth area that takes a focused look at his daily work. All sections were developed by Grcic specifically for this exhibition – you see, it’s worth a visit!

Till 24th May 2015, Z33 in Hasselt

Blow-Up

Classic film and photography of Michelangelo Antonioni’s masterpiece “Blow-Up” from 1966 will be exhibited until middle of April in C/O Berlin, which will be the only stop in Germany. Antonioni’s first entirely English-language movie about a fashion photographer, played by David Hemmings, who believes he has unwittingly captured a murder on film, is seen as a multi-layered visual reflection on photography and film as modes of mechanical representation. The exhibition, which explores the relationship between moving pictures and static photography and their unique modes of operation, includes 250 photographs and clips from the movie as well as supplementary film and video installations. To accompany the exhibition, the gallery will be presenting a film series as well as a catalogue published by Hatje Cantz.

Vivian Maier – Street Photographer

The retrospective exhibition at the Willy Brandt Haus is featuring the work of Vivian Maier, a street photographer whose impressive picture collection of the early 50s and 60s was discovered at the end of her life – and then immediately caused a worldwide sensation. Maier was working as a nursemaid for more than four decades from the early 1950s onwards – but her real passion was photography. She captured moments of the urban everyday life in the streets of New York and Chicago and photographed people, objects and landscapes in her surroundings. Her entire life inevitably passed by unnoticed, until in 2007, two years before she died, her photographic body of work was discovered: a colossal archive consisting of more than 150,000 photographs and a multitude of undeveloped films. The presentation in the Willy-Brandt-Haus provides an excerpt of the fine eye and fineness with which Vivian Maier illustrated the visual language of her generation.
