Clemens Behr

German artist Clemens Behr pushes the boundaries of paper (board) to another level. The graphic designer conjures up the most amazing origami-like, room-filling artworks and even takes his abstract cardboard-installations out of galleries and into public spaces.

Clemens Behr

How and when did you first enter the artistic scene?

I’m not sure I can answer that. I don’t know how to define it; which exhibitions you would have to do, which people you would have to know, and in which magazines you would have to appear in order to say that. But what I can say is that my work was taken more seriously after I began to exhibit abroad. That was at the beginning of 2009.

Describe your art in three words...

Complicated, inexpensive and improvised.

Why paper?

Because paper is very inexpensive and very easy to work with. Paper lies all around and the fact that it is not particularly valued by people means it is thrown away. But that is exactly what makes it appealing to me. I love using everyday materials and walk through the DIY store to look for new ideas or materials. I began working with cardboard boxes 5 years ago, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I will spend my next 5 years working with the folds and staples of cardboard.

Describe the design process... how do you work?

It all begins with the space, which acts as a basis for planning. The space defines the colours and shapes, as well as any fixing or mounting possibilities and the dimensions of the piece. I can’t plan that much in advance, because I can never be certain which possibilities and ma- chinery will be available for me to use. Making prototypes doesn’t really make that much sense. Once I have the composition or an idea of the finished piece visualized in my head, I usually begin to paint the cardboard. Then a wooden frame is screwed together onto which the cardboard will be fixed. This occurs very haphazardly.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?

They usually occur in the space itself. I very rarely have the idea for a design beforehand. Often, it is architecturally interesting places that inspire me to work. Sometimes though, as I said, it can be a visit to the DIY store. But the source of my inspiration can definitely be traced back to the work of Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters. Even earlier perhaps in Mac Gyver and Transformers.

You also exhibit your art in public spaces: where in the world would you most like to install your work?

That’s difficult to say. A courtyard in Dortmund- Applerbeck can be more interesting than say Times Square or some trendy corner of Berlin. Often, I choose places with nothing more in mind than getting a great photo once the work is complete. I mean, at the end of the day, that’s all I get left with. Right now, some very extreme locations would appeal to me, such as an arctic landscape or deserts and mountains.

Which of your projects to date are you most proud of and why?

That has to be the final project of my graphics degree, for which I needed almost 7 weeks to complete the set-up. The installation spanned across 2 floors and was equipped with mirrors and motors. I have since, however, learned to value the sum of smaller projects, rather than to be disappointed at the failures of bigger ones. That way, my installation in the New York subway has more meaning than a larger project, even though I only worked for about 30 minutes in the subway.

What is next for you? Any new projects?

One big project would be my new study course which starts soon (tomorrow). Otherwise, a festival in Sao Paulo is next and a group exhibition entitled “Simple is Rare” in Neurotitan, Berlin.
