Raise your glasses to Mister Roth!

A working bar in the lobby of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is a fitting tribute to an iconic artist at Art Basel this year

Raise your glasses to Mister Roth!

On the occasion of the upcoming Art Basel, the leading international gallery Hauser & Wirth will install a fully functional, specially crafted bar in the lobby of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel. Titled the ‘Roth Bar’, it is designed by Björn, Oddur and Einar Roth, son and grandsons of German-born Swiss artist Dieter Roth (1930-1998), and will be open for the duration of the fair.

The concept of a bar as a dynamic and changing art installation is a continuing element in Dieter Roth’s cross-generational practice. He conceived of the idea back in the early 1980s and continued to represent it as one of the central themes in his works. The version of the Roth Bar at Art Basel will be transported from Zurich, where it currently forms part of the ‘Roth Bar & Studio’ exhibition.

When he first started exhibiting with Hauser & Wirth, Roth insisted on integrating a bar into part of his first show. So he and his son Björn installed the functional ‘Bar 2’ (1983-1997) around the corner from the gallery on Fabrikstrasse in Zurich. Every beer bottle became a part of the bar installation and visitors’ conversations were recorded and archived. Nearly 20 years after this event, the Roth Bar is now housed in the gallery and will soon be installed for Art Basel.

The Roth Bar, which will be located in the lobby of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, is made of reclaimed wood, brightly-coloured electric lights, disco balls, sculptured busts and hand-painted signs. Additionally, cans of paint and other assorted detritus have been repurposed to form part of the bar’s overall structure.

To celebrate this installation of the Roth Bar in Basel, Thomas Huhn, Chef de Bar at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, has created a cocktail with a vodka, Lillet and Cointreau base in honour of the Roths, called ‘Le Roi Roth’. Huhn is the recipient of a number of awards, including Bar of the Year 2015 and Hotel Bar of the Year 2012, awarded by Mixology Bar magazine, and he is also winner of the Maison Leblon Cocktail Competition 2014. We’re looking forward to stopping by the Grand Hotel, enjoying a Le Roi Roth and relaxing after a long day at the fair.
